Abstract
In this project, Alloyed and RHP will build a European consortium to mature the concept of hybrid manufactured components. The goal is to combine DED (direct energy deposition) and SLM (selective laser melting) manufacturing methods and to develop the technologies from a TRL level of 2 to 5. The consortium will leverage relevant expertise in materials science and additive manufacturing via SLM and DED to tackle the unique technical challenges posed by this market; Alloyed will lead on SLM technologies and RHP will lead on DED technologies, respectively. The high-performance materials utilized in this project are ABD1000 & FS-85; ABD1000 is a state-of-the-art Nickel-based superalloy designed with Alloyed’s ABD® design platform for high AM processability and superior mechanical properties at operating temperatures of 1000 °C. FS-85 is a Niobium-based superalloy with excellent strength and creep resistance at temperatures exceeding 1000 °C. Output of this project is successful fabrication of 5 demonstrator components in ABD1000 & FS-85 using ambitious hybrid manufacturing techniques involving DED onto an SLM printed part; one ABD1000 turbine blade and FS-85 thruster fabricated via SLM respectively, furthermore one ABD1000 turbine blade (tip repair) and two FS-85 thrusters (multi-material deposition of expansion nozzle) via DED onto SLM parts. These are to be then used for dissemination and exploitation purposes of the materials and process technologies developed throughout the project.
