Abstract
The consortium consists of ATTOPHOTONICS, an Austrian precision engineering firm specialized in surface treatments, and PREMET, a Hungarian 3D printing manufacturer of titanium medical devices. Surface characteristics achieved by the use of different surface treatment procedures play an important role in the cleanliness and the clinical performance of medical implants. In a broader perspective objective of the project is greening of surface treatment of medical implants, as well as the production of cleaner implants. The specific objectives includes 1) replace hazardous chemicals used for etching and anodization by green solutions 2) replace current state-of-art Al2O3 blasting particles with hydroxyapatite (HA) to eliminate unintended traces of the blasting material, and manual blasting with a robotic one especially for custom-made implants 3) develop surface treatment procedure specific to 3D printed implants by the combination of the individual procedures. Results of the project: green solutions, procedures and equipment for etching and anodization, robotic HA blasting procedure, and implant specific surface treatment procedures by the combination of the former procedures. Preparation for commercialization of the developments makes an integral part of the project.
